That's right!
The Chicago area offers a great diversity for the angler.
Right now charters trolling for salmon, steelhead, brown trout, and lake trout show their clients a great time, while sending them home with great-tasting fresh fish.
It won't be long now and shore bound anglers will begin catching nice perch and then as fall cools the waters, the salmon will be closer to shore providing great opportunities for them.
Big lakes aren't your thing?
How about one of the many rivers a short drive from the lakefront? As their waters heat up hungry walleyes are waiting, soon to be followed by the fiesty smallmouth bass.
While really large walleyes aren't common in area rivers, fish in the 7-10 pound class can be caught by good anglers, and there are plenty of 4-5 pound fish.
Perhaps river fishing isn't for you.
How about our area's Fox Chain of Lakes or one of the several cooling lakes. Cooling lakes are a favorite of many, they are simply the lakes used to cool power plants. From walleyes to smallmouth and largemouth bass, to all kinds of panfish, Chicagoans in the know can't wait for opening day. Perhaps it's a relaxing lunch or after work break your looking for and want to enjoy it by fishing.
The Chicago area is also laced with Forest Preserves. Forest Preserves are county-owned land set aside for the enjoyment of the public. Many have small ponds or lakes included which are stocked with a great variety of species. Within a very short drive of downtown Chicago and across an expressway from a huge shopping mall, lies Busse Woods Froest Preserve, and that my friends, was recently stocked with muskies.
Muskies? In Chicago? Sure, a river that flows out of the Fox Chain of Lakes has them too. Shabbona, a couple hour drive from downtown Chicago gave up the state record a few years ago. Over 50 inches of screaming muskie.
The possibilities are almost endless, so come on. next time you think of Chicago, think of fishing.
