We had talked with Werner from Afrihunt Safaris for many years when
attending the SCI NE Michigan Chapter banquet and finally were able to
jump at the chance to join him and his fiance at their farm/business in
July 2009 for our "huntingmoon"! We had 7 animals to take over 7 days
- Jeff was to take the warthog, zebra, impala, and blesbuck; Amelia to
take the red hartebees, blue wildebeest, and gemsbuck.
We bow hunted for a few days. Jeff had a great opportunity to take a large impala,
but had not received his 'trophy assessment lesson' from Werner as of
yet. Jeff took the HUGE red harted beast while bow hunting on the 2nd day,
after waiting what seemed a lifetime for it to come into full view. On
the 3rd day, we hunted separately and each shot a wart hog; Jeff with
his bow and Amelia with gun (even though Jeff was to shoot this animal,
she couldn't let that monster get away and will never hear the end of
it!).
Jeff bow hunted the 4th day and Amelia and Werner scouted the
6,000 acres by truck. We spotted some zebra and started stalking them
and lost sight. We climbed on top of the water tower to scan the area
and spotted a large male gemsbuck that we stalked by foot for several
hundred yards. We lost sight of it and Werner spotted a blue
wildebeest out of range. Amelia took the gemsbuck that came back
within sight, closer than the wildebeest - a 140 yd perfect shot! The
Remington 300 ultramag did not disappoint! Jeff and I had the answer
system added to this gun and it really shoots like a 22! We picked up
Jeff and headed out together. On the way, we spotted the impala that
Jeff could have taken with bow and Jeff took it. Werner has a lot of
land and not many roads, so it was not the typical road hunt that one
may expect. Later that day, we spotted a zebra 600 yards away and Jeff
and Werner stalked it. Jeff took it at 130 yards. Five down, two to
go.
Day 5 - we hunted all day for a blue wildebees and had a few brief
opportunities, but no clear shots. Werner, Renee, Jeff and Amelia
traveled into Botswana and Namibia for 6 days, camping along the swamp
and river amongst the crocodiles and hippos, fished, and went on a
photo safari. Wonderful time!
We got back to the farm to hunt our last few days. We spotted a blue wildebees and Amelia was to shoot and could
not get a clear shot due to the brush. Jeff took the gun and agreed,
but then was given the opportunity when the wildebees moved. Jeff took
the 180 yd shot and made a great shot in the kill zone with the 300 0D
ultramag. The animals are really tough and it moved a little ways. We
stalked it further and Jeff put it down. We ended up going to another
farm to hunt blesbuck. They are often in open fields and long range
shots. Amelia got the opportunity and shot a nice buck quartering
away... the first shot was a little bit forward. It jumped and moved a
bit and ended up dropping after Amelia got a 218 yard shot in the kill
zone. Even though we didn't shoot those we each anticipated, we got all
7 animals; all very beautiful trophies with a lot of mass!
